how to become the only option in a world of substitutes
This week, I spoke with several experts—seasoned, respected, and well compensated. Yet every one of them confessed the same frustration: no margin. No room for creativity or variety. No real expansion left in their income. Fewer choices in life.
Then there’s another expert I spoke with at length—same level of mastery, same years of experience—whose life looks completely different. She works fewer hours, experiments more, and is so energized by her work that she recently turned down an offer to sell her business for a sum that would’ve set her up for life. One of her offers alone brings in three million dollars a year.
The difference isn’t talent, experience, or even reputation.
It’s how she’s learned to create value for others.
And yet, most experts never make that shift. Not because they can’t—because they’re stuck in patterns that make them feel productive but quietly keep them ordinary.
Here’s what usually gets in the way:
1. the inherited playbook.
You built your expertise inside someone else’s model. The rules about how to serve, price, and grow weren’t yours—you just learned to run them well. But the same rules that built your career are now keeping you boxed in.
2. the “not valuable enough” lie.
You assume what comes naturally to you—your insights, instincts, and stories—isn’t special enough to matter. You downplay your own lens, thinking “real” value has to sound impressive. The truth: what feels obvious to you is gold to everyone else.
3. the reinvention myth.
You tell yourself it’s too late to pivot. You’ve gone too far down one path to start over. But you don’t need to start over—you just need to build outward from who you already are.
4. the “i’m capped” illusion.
You’re busy. Overbooked. Out of margin. You think there’s no time for anything new. But what’s actually full isn’t your schedule—it’s your imagination.
5. the emotional risk factor.
You fear what people will say if you try something different and it doesn’t land. But safety has its own cost. You just pay it in potential.
If any of these sound familiar, you’re not behind—you’re just operating at the edge of the system that built you.
Escaping comparison isn’t about doing more; it’s about seeing differently. It’s learning to design value in a way that makes what you offer un-copyable.
That’s the leverage shift—when people stop comparing you and start describing you.
For paid subscribers, I’m breaking down the framework I teach privately to help experts build that kind of brand—one that stands alone, commands margin, and attracts opportunity instead of chasing it.
