I learned about the Hamas attacks in Israel later in the day as I don't follow the news on my Sabbath day. It's challenging to grapple with the tension of a brutal and vicious war raging in a distant land while so many of us are taking a day to restore and rekindle our inner peace.
I have friends living in Israel, and the images of civilians being indiscriminately targeted and abducted are sickening. I haven't confirmed the safety of all my friends yet, so I'm keeping them in my prayers and reaching out for updates. I also have a friend who resides in Gaza; he was my college roommate. He dedicated many years to working for the United Nations, serving underprivileged communities worldwide, before retiring in his hometown of Gaza. His name is Issa, the Arabic version of Jesus, and he is safe. However, I worry for him as this may be just the beginning of a full-fledged war, unlike anything we've seen in the region for the past 50 years.
This war, of course, isn't the sole conflict underway. Bloodless wars are happening on multiple fronts - political, economic, and relational, all ultimately spiritual in nature. These conflicts ebb and flow, but they never truly vanish. Inner peace is the one aspect of our lives we have complete control over. Cultivating a resilient, creative, and peaceful inner game is the key to nurturing an outer game for ourselves, our families, and our communities.
I speak from personal experience, having lived through a military coup in Chile, the civil war in Mozambique, and the fall of the USSR in Russia. I know firsthand what it feels like to be in mortal danger, to have no certainty, and to be a refugee seeking safety and asylum. Thankfully, most of my readers will never encounter such hardships. Ironically, this is the week I chose to upload a re-edited condensed version of a life story video I made some time ago. This timing is providential and offers hope and good news to those feeling overwhelmed and heartbroken.
