Today’s Deep Dive
Why I’m the Worst Candidate for Christianity — and Still Believe
Let’s be honest:
In today’s modern, data-driven, post-enlightenment world, you’d think we’d have outgrown religion by now.
And yet… here it is. Still stubbornly alive.
The Harvard Study of Adult Development — the most comprehensive longitudinal study on human flourishing ever done — found something remarkable.
Those who live the longest, healthiest, most fulfilling lives? They tend to have two things: deep relationships… and a transcendent spiritual life.
In other words: success is tied to significance.
And significance is hard to come by without some connection to the eternal.
This wasn’t great news for someone like me — raised atheist, fluent in skepticism, and spiritually tone-deaf for most of my early life.
If you were casting a movie called “Most Unlikely Person to Become a Christian” — I’d be the lead.
But at 26, something cracked open.
Not because I was looking for it — but because what I was looking for kept leaving me empty.
I had some success. I had momentum. I had options.
But no amount of “next” could fill the space marked meaning.
Faith didn’t hit like lightning.
It arrived like sunrise — slowly, then all at once.
It gave me a new lens:
Work wasn’t just for achievement. Marriage wasn’t just partnership. Parenting wasn’t just responsibility.
Everything got deeper. Fuller. More human and more divine at the same time.
Last week, I attended a Holy Week service at a traditional church.
Foot washing was part of it.
(Yes, I rolled my eyes — internally. For about five seconds.)
Then, a volunteer knelt and gently washed and dried my feet.
It was unexpectedly Intimate and emotional. Quintessential.
Not an intellectual concept, but a deep knowing.
The highest kind of success is service.
Not the kind that burns you out. The kind that fills you up — because you’re tapping into something eternal.
And that brings us to Easter.
Here’s what I didn’t know when I first started exploring this faith:
The resurrection of Jesus isn’t just theology — it’s history.
The earliest written accounts of it appeared within a few years of the actual events — while eyewitnesses were still alive.
Compared to most ancient historical events (which are often recorded centuries later), that’s not just credible — it’s extraordinary.
And these weren’t anonymous legends.
They were real people — who ran in fear, then came back risking their lives to say: We saw Him. He’s alive.
People don’t die for what they know is false.
Something happened.
Which leads us to an even deeper question:
If resurrection is possible… what does that mean for us?
To explore that, I sat down with John Burke — a former agnostic and engineer who’s spent 35 years studying over 1,000 near-death experiences.
Different countries. Different beliefs. Different backgrounds.
Yet across the board… these people describe strikingly similar things.
Light. Love. Beauty. A presence that knows them completely — and loves them fully.
It’s not proof. But it’s compelling.
And it might just open a new door for you.
